Book Club Diversity

This book club has been amazing so I thought I would start to document the discussions and experiences we have had throughout it so far.

This book club session we are talking about diversity. Not necessarily in the racial way but in a whole picture, what makes you unique kind of way. I wanted the students to really understand that each person is diverse because of a number of things that made them who they are.

We started the week with a white piece of paper and the word Diversity written on it in black and white. Their first "assignment" was to take the paper home and decorate how it would represent them and show me and the rest of the club things that made them diverse.

Coming back to the group the next week was great. The students shared very unique details about themselves and the coolest part was, they were showing how they were different and how proud of that they were.

One student shared his adoption story, others shared how their families were unique because of divorce or half siblings, others shared physical attributes that made them unique, others shared things they did in their spare time. The bottom line was these kids were excited to hear about differences of their classmates and embraced each and every one.

Questions:
Would activities like this help in maintaining the "diversity is cool" way of life at school?
Are their possible threats to students as well as teachers because of this self disclosure?
Why aren't more kids excited about sharing things that make them different in school rather than conforming?
